Good Parts, Bad Parts

It might feel like there are parts of you that only exist to make your life more difficult. Parts of you that are impulsive, self destructive, avoidant, terrified of abandonment. What could be the point of them? It’s so tempting to just want these parts to go away- to push them aside and never have to struggle with them again. Psychologist Lorna Benjamin once said “Every psychopathology is a gift of love.” I truly believe this. Every part of us that seems destructive or difficult was initially created by your own psyche to try to help you through something terrible. Your anxiety may feel destructive now, but there was a time when being hyper vigilant was what you needed to survive. Every part of you that feels destructive now was created to protect you. And we need every part of ourselves to be fully whole. If we through a part of us away, we lose apart of our wholeness. We lose an important piece of ourselves. Once we accept that every part of ourselves has a function, we can work with these parts to be more helpful to us in the here and now.
