When was the last time you took a break? What has stopped you from taking a break? Is it because you felt like you didn’t have enough time or energy to do it “right”? So often we do not let ourselves take breaks because of our own perfectionism. “I don’t have time to meditate for a full ten minutes right now so I won’t do it at all.” What if you took a 30 second meditation just to give your mind a brief rest? “I don’t have time to take twenty minute mindful walk in the neighborhood right now, so I’ll just move on to my next task instead.” What if you took ten seconds to raise you face towards the sun, feeling the sensation of warmth against your skin?
So often we think of taking breaks as lengthy and self indulgent tasks. We fall into all or nothing thinking so easily.
But what if it would actually benefit us more in the long term to think of “taking breaks” as a micro skill. It doesn’t have to be long, it doesn’t have to be disruptive to our lives.
How can we sprinkle this skill throughout our days to help keep ourselves regulated, as opposed to waiting until we have the “perfect” time to take a break (which inevitably never comes!).
